The Easiest Escapes for Multigenerational Families

January 24, 2025

Sometimes, the most important thing about a family vacation is simply spending time together—you want the trip to feel effortless, instead of on a tight time schedule or always thinking ahead to what comes next on the itinerary.

So if you are looking to bring the generations together on a family vacation that’s as stress-free as possible, here are the three trip types I’d recommend:

1. An ocean or river cruise.

Cruises are so great for multigenerational family escapes—all you have to do is show up, sail away, and the cruise takes care of the rest! It’s easy for family members to do their own thing during the day; some members may want to explore more on daily excursions, while others may want to relax on the ship. Every evening, you can come together over dinner to share about your days. Plus, you never have to think about how to arrange transportation for dinner or make reservations, since the wine-ing and dining is all done on your ship.

A classic ocean cruise is great for families, though you can consider a river cruise too if you’re after an experience that combines exploration with ease. River cruises often cap at just 200 passengers, so your family will enjoy a more intimate atmosphere on board. River cruise ships often dock right in the heart of their destinations, so it’s easy to simply stroll off the boat and start exploring. River cruise ships don’t come with all the bells and whistles on board that larger ocean cruise ships have—like surf simulators or water parks—so I recommend this experience for families with children on the older side.

2. A villa at an all-inclusive resort.

Like on a cruise, an all-inclusive resort makes it easy to gather together as a family without having to worry about daily activities and dining—it’s all right there at the resort, from multiple restaurants to choose from to pools, seaside watersports, and nightly entertainment.

To elevate your resort escape, I recommend opting for a resort that offers villa stays on property. Renting a villa just for your family will give you all a bit more privacy, while also fostering more meaningful time together—as opposed to if you were all spread out in separate suites.

3. An African safari.

Okay, hear me out—I know an African safari is a bucket-list kind of experience that certainly doesn’t sound “easy and relaxed.” But once your family makes the admittedly long flight over, it truly is an effortless vacation!

That’s because a safari is an all-inclusive experience. Once you arrive, everything is taken care of by your luxury safari lodge or camp—including your gourmet meals and daily game drives. All your family has to do is show up ready for discovery!

Plus, an African safari really appeals to family members of all ages. Kids will love spotting animals out in the savannah that they’ve only seen in storybooks back home. And daily game drives make wildlife exploration possible even for family members with limited mobility, since it all takes place from your guide-driven 4×4 vehicle. We can even arrange to have a private driver pick your family up from the airport to transport you straight to your safari lodge, so your trip starts out on an effortless note.
